LODE is a collection of impressions left on artist Veronica Graham after researching Nevada’s boom and bust culture of the late 19th century. It starts from the sky and then moves down through the layered history of mining in the Nevada high desert. A pattern of mine shafts puncture the entire design to hint at the time-rending impact of this thirst for raw resources.
This project began with an invitation for Graham to exhibit in Virginia City, NV—home of the Comstock Lode, the first major discovery of silver ore in the US. Through the research Graham saw a link with her childhood in San Jose, CA. A city surrounded by foothills filled with the remnants of 1800s mercury mines and the epicenter of present-day “Silicon Valley.” This book is a reflection on economic booms that have changed land and altered time, the ghosts of which still remain.
