    The Horn Smith, by Nils Bergslien, 1896. Note the ølkjenge (beer bowl) on the lower left. Bergslien was from Voss, of course. If you have 25,000 USD to spare the original could be yours

    Very interesting book with a fascinating alternative view on the beginning of agriculture and formation of early states. After chapter 1 it gets very repetitive, however. Poorly structured, and less in-depth on the evidence than it ought to be. Still, worth reading.

    Very sad: the legendary Šnekutis bar in the Užupis area closed today. It will be demolished to make room for luxury apartments. It was a unique bar, and one of my favourite places to drink beer anywhere in the world.

    Craft breweries are rapidly turning kveik into yet another juice-delivery system, which risks slamming the door on far richer, more interesting possibilities. Let’s all be aware of what we’re dismantling before we dismantle kveik completely.

    This was fascinating, and also very well researched and written. The parallels with Norway are surprising and hugely interesting. Much food for thought here

    Anne Applebaum has a good description of parts of Trump’s plan that I alluded to earlier: However, I think that plan has less benign parts, too, that she doesn’t get into.

    I fear the real test for US institutions lies ahead of us, not behind. Trump & co have long prepared plans for if they lose the election, as they thought they would. I think Trump will be out on Jan 21, but there might be some real turbulence ahead.

    Ok here we go. Look at the electoral maps by county for the last few decades of US presidential elections.  You’ll notice that the South goes almost uniformly Republican red every time. Duh. But if you look closer, there’s something else there ...

    If it wasn’t for corona, Trump probably would have won easily. For Europe this means that continuing to rely on the US for security is nuts. Particularly as EU total defense spending is way bigger than Russia and 2x China. If we spent the money well we could defend ourselves.

    Read that in the old days Russians would sometimes plow a circle around their village so that the “sacred power of earth” would protect the village. Then I remembered that I’d seen a a story about a village doing just that against corona

    An extremely Japanese touch: Oda Nobunaga had effectively become shogun (real ruler), but could not assume the title as he was not of the Minamoto family. Being able to order the emperor to cut him a piece of wood effectively communicated that he was now in practice shogun.

    Japanese emperor’s cabinet of wonders holds a highly fragrant piece of wood that floated ashore in the 6th century. Pieces were cut for Oda Nobunaga, Tokugawa Iieyasu, and the Emperor Meiji. The piece, of course, has a name.

    Revisiting an old flame after about 2 years of drinking only Norwegian smoked farmhouse ales. It is a world classic, and it is very good, but ... there are quite a few of the Norwegians I’d rather drink.

    This was just desperately sad to read. Probably no more new music from Keith Jarrett ever. And it sounds like he’s having a hard time accepting it himself.
