I focus on beer on this account, but being an ally means being visible, so let me note for the record: I strongly support Black Lives Matter and the effort to address systemic racism like the kind that killed George Floyd.

Apparently I'm the last person that likes large portion high ABV beers

On Show 126, we discuss one of the most interesting projects in the beer world, the Oregon Hops and Brewing Archive. On hand is the architect of that project and its archivist, Tiah Edmunson-Morton. Listen in PDX on Thurs at 1p, or anywhere here:

Hive mind? (John, I’ve wondered, too. I remember when I first started hearing the term—long after they were on the market.)

Really good stuff here. I think about this a lot. This pandemic has created so many cross-currents as we try to do the right thing. I’m retweeting a middle tweet with a link, but read the whole thread:

Craft beer in 22oz "bombers" and 750ml bottles is becoming a thing of the past. We () have transitioned The Abyss, which has historically been sold in 22oz bottles to 12oz 4-packs. Here's why.

"But bottles still project an image of elegance cans can’t match, and while Deschutes is willing to change up the format in order to better serve customers, it appears they’re not willing to scrap the beer’s identity entirely"

Friend of the pod with some insight on their Reserve Series format switch.

Since 2006, Deschutes has packaged their Reserve Series line of beers in 22-ounce bombers. This week, they changed course, releasing The Abyss in a four-pack of 12-ounce bottles. Here’s what they were thinking.

While we’re talking about changes, here’s an interesting case: released this year’s Abyss in four-packs of 12-ounce bottles—a switch from the 22s of a decade +. Big hit on per-ounce profit, but perhaps they’ll find a broader audience. Thoughts?

Trends shift, fashions change. Reading ’s latest hops newsletter about development of new hops and I began to wonder if fruitiness will continue to dominate preferences. Spice and herbs have a long, august history in hopping. Might they become the next big thing?
