Piece by Piece (Western Animation)

Piece by Piece is a 2024 animated biographical film centered around Pharrell Williams and is a joint venture between his production company I am OTHER and The LEGO Group. It was released on October 11, 2024.

The film sees Williams narrate his life story and rise to fame in the form of LEGO brick and minifigures. Joining Williams are Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, Justin Timberlake, Daft Punk, N.O.R.E., Busta Rhymes, Timbaland, Jay-Z, and 20 Feet from Stardom filmmaker Morgan Neville, who also directs.

It is the first theatrically-released LEGO film following the company parting ways with Warner Bros. following The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, as well as their first following Universal’s acquisition of the film rights that was first announced back in 2020. The film was released domestically under their Focus Features label, while Universal themselves handled distribution internationally.

Previews: Official Trailer

Trope by trope:

  • All of the Other Reindeer: The trailer's depiction of Pharrell's childhood shows him ostracized for his eccentricity, in this case, wearing a fishbowl on his head.
  • The Artifact: The closing scene shows Pharrell and his friends performing the movie’s title track at the Something In The Water festival. As the festival was originally supposed to take place during the film’s opening weekend, with there being plans to screen the film there on opening night, the setting was likely a reference to this. However, when the festival got pushed back by six months, this reference no longer worked within this context, though it still fit within the film itself.
  • As Himself: Being an auto-biographical feature, the film features Pharrell Williams voicing himself, alongside Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, and even director Morgan Neville also voicing LEGO versions of themselves.
  • Built with LEGO: The entire film is done in LEGO animation, and is itself produced by The LEGO Group.
  • The Cameo: Aside from the celebrity interviewees, there are a few non-speaking cameos:
    • ET (reusing his design from LEGO Dimensions) has a cameo when Pharrell compares Teddy Riley showing up in his hometown to seeing the alien at the mall.
    • The Minions make an appearance in LEGO form as Pharrell tries to crack the song that would become "Happy" for Despicable Me 2.
    • Tyler, the Creator cameos as one of Pharrell’s teachers.
  • Credits Gag: At the end of the credits, there is a disclaimer stating that "Not everything in this film is 100% accurate. For example, Pharrell never went to space."
  • Deliberate VHS Quality: Some scenes are presented as if they were filmed with analog camcorders, such as Pharrell and Chad creating their first beats, them celebrating their first award in a limo, and Pharrell growing distant from his peers after his grandma's death.
  • Double-Meaning Title: Piece by Piece can represent the LEGO pieces that are used to illustrate the biopic or how Pharrell Williams slowly climbs his way to international stardom piece by piece as indicated by the trailer.
  • Executive Meddling: Pharrell becomes a victim of this in universe as various executives attempt to influence his creative decisions.
  • G-Rated Drug: "PG Spray" is used as a stand-in for marijuana during one of Snoop Dogg's scenes.
  • Genre Shift: As opposed to the high-stakes comedy adventures of the previous LEGO movies, the trailer indicates that this film will be a more grounded if still fantastical depiction of Pharrell's life through LEGO pieces.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: During the "Piece by Piece" song, the executives who escaped while Pharrell was at his Darkest Hour, came back to exploit him again. They're taken by Neptune with the ocean and end up devoured a large fish. This, of course, never happened in real life.
  • Never Trust a Trailer: The shot of Kendrick Lamar in the trailer seemed to indicate that his scene would be shown in full colour, but in the movie itself it was shown in black and white, likely to match the style of the "Alright" music video, with the song and its impact being the focus of his scene.
  • Precision F-Strike: Two uses of "shit" are bleeped out, but Jay-Z says "hood shit" uncensored and near the end of the film, Pharrell says "they've been through some shit" uncensored twice.
  • Ruder and Cruder: This LEGO movie features frequent profanity up to a medium level, whereas the previous LEGO movies barely featured any, as well as some drug references and suggestive themes.
  • Stop Faux-tion: As with the previous theatrical LEGO movies, the film is animated in a style resembling stop motion.
  • Visual Pun: The trailer ends on Snoop Dogg's minifigure transforming into an actual dog.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: At the beginning of the film, the director is rather perplexed at the idea of Pharrell's biopic being rendered in LEGO pieces. As if to lampshade this, the scene following this in the trailer is Pharrell Williams singing the first line to "Happy" (It might seem crazy what I'm about to say).
