Baby Puss (Western Animation)

Baby Puss is an animated Tom and Jerry short released on December 25th, 1943 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was directed by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera.

A little girl is playing house, with Tom (unwillingly) playing the part of the baby. Jerry makes fun of Tom, leading to the usual chase, but then things really get going when the local alley cats come to join in on the mockery.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Pervert: When Tom peeks through the doll house window, Jerry is in the bathtub, singing while pretending to bathe. Upon "noticing" Tom is staring, he screams and acts like a woman whose privacy is being invaded, followed by hitting Tom with his bathbrush.
  • All There in the Manual: The girl’s name is Nancy.
  • Artistic License – Biology: Mice and other rodents do not vomit.
  • Cats Are Mean: The alley cats mercilessly torment Tom just because he’s being treated like a baby.
  • The Diaper Change: After getting his diaper soaked in a fishbowl, the alley cats change Tom, but in the manner of surgeons.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness:
    • Butch has kind of a higher pitched nasally voice here. Not quite as extreme as is voice was in “The Alley Cat”, but also nowhere near the more Bronx accented voice he will be more commonly associated with.
    • The small cat actually has dialog here, generally he remains a silent character in his later appearances.
  • The Faceless: Nancy.
  • Foul Medicine: The castor oil. Nancy first threatens to give Tom it if he gets out of the crib again, then delivers on her threat thanks to Jerry and the alley cats, and finally Jerry gets some of the stuff himself as Laser-Guided Karma. Both Tom and Jerry hate the stuff.
  • Gratuitous Portuguese: After changing Tom's diaper, the alley cats starts to sing mockingly "Mamãe, Eu Quero" by Carmen Miranda, but it’s sung in a badly Spanish accent and pronunciation form, that it can easily be confused for a Spanish song instead.
  • Humiliation Conga: Tom is forcibly dressed up as a baby, then is tormented by Jerry and the alley cats, topped off with being force-fed castor oil even though he did nothing to deserve it.
  • Jerkass: The alley cats that torment Tom.
  • Karma Houdini: The alley cats get off scott-free for all the abuse they put Tom through. They flee upon Nancy’s return, leaving Tom to take the heat.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Jerry gets what he has coming for luring those cats into the house, as some of the castor oil Nancy forces Tom to take spills into Jerry's mouth and he pukes it out.
  • Letting the Air out of the Band: Near the end of the short, the hilarity fanfare that is played when Jerry laughs at Tom for vomiting the castor oil peters out when the remaining oil leaks out of the bottle and drops directly into the mouse's mouth, forcing him to go to the window to vomit alongside Tom.
  • Pet Dress-Up: The premise of the short is Nancy forcing Tom dress like a baby, which earns him the mockery of Jerry and the other alley cats.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here!: The alley cats flee when Nancy returns, leaving Tom to take the heat.
  • Squirrels in My Pants: After changing his diaper, the cats drop a live fish down Tom's pants, causing him to writhe in rhythm, leading to a music number.
  • Tutti Frutti Hat: The small cat puts a fruit bowl on his head and does an imitation of Carmen Miranda singing "Mamãe, Eu Quero".
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: Tom and Jerry puke the castor oil they swallow out the window.

Force-fed Castor Oil

Yeah makes sense Tom doesn't want to take it, especially since he wasn't even the one causing the trouble.

How well does it match the trope?
