Windowkill (Video Game)
Something's wrong with the window...note
Windowkill is a Shoot 'em Up game created by solo Indie developer torcado. It centers on an Interface Screw of the device you play on itself - the game's window is constantly closing in on you, and must be pushed outwards with your attacks.

The game was originally made for the Ludum Dare 54 game jam, in which it ranked second place overall. An updated version was released on Steam on February 23, 2024. It is available on both Windows and Linux.

Windowkill contains examples of:

  • Achievement Mockery:
    • The "soup" background is unlocked by using the Obliterate ability on a star pickup, which destroys and wastes it.
    • The "serenity" texture is unlocked by dying to a slime's trail.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": The bosses include a smiley face named Smiley, a wyrm named Wyrm, and a slime (eventually) named Slime.
  • all lowercase letters: Most of the text in-game is lowercase, including the window titles. The main exceptions are the credits and the game's title screen logo.
  • Anti-Frustration Features:
    • Dragging the windows for the Peer or Drain perks will drastically slow down time for several seconds, allowing you to focus on repositioning instead of dodging.
    • After you trigger the game's ending, you unlock a setting that lets you disable it entirely so you can't accidentally end a run.
  • Asteroids Monster:
    • The Wyrm boss is a chain of eyes that will split into different chains if you kill one of the segments in its middle.
    • Slimest is a Blob Monster boss that splits into three Slimers, which then split into three Slimes each.
  • The Computer Shall Taunt You: The Orb Array selects an area of the screen and takes a screenshot that deals damage if you're inside it. If the attack lands, you can find the screenshot it took in a folder titled "cringe_compilation".
  • Collision Damage: Everything in the game deals damage on contact. For most standard enemies, this is their only way to deal damage.
  • Co-Op Multiplayer: The game's 3.0 update added local co-op with an unlimited amount of players.
  • Defeat Equals Explosion: Defeated enemies explode into particles.
  • Doppelgänger Attack: Playing as Mebo replaces your multi-shot upgrade with an option to buy a copy of yourself that follows your movement and firing. Its perk Propagate temporarily doubles the amount of clones you have.
  • Endless Game: The default "endless" mode presents itself as such. More and more enemies and bosses spawn as you go on, and your only goal is to survive as long as possible. However, through a secret that involves unlocking and aligning all three perks, you can summon the Final Boss "???" and defeat it to win the game.
  • Game Mod: Officially supported, with the ability to add and share mods via the Steam Workshop and an official modding guide released by torcado.
  • No Plot? No Problem!: Just fight off enemies to survive as long as possible, the game has no story.
  • Piñata Enemy: Sweepers are purple circles that "sweep" up stray coins and grow bigger as they collect them. As they absorb more coins, the amount they drop on death increases.
  • Play Every Day: Daily challenges that assign you a random character, ability, upgrade combination, and starting time were added in the game's 4.0 update.
  • Roguelike: The bosses and enemies you face are random, and death will send you back to the beginning of the game. The only sort of progression between runs is unlocking new characters via specific achievements.
  • Secret Character:
    • :) is a character based on the game's secret Final Boss, and is unlocked after you defeat it. It attacks by directing around a mouse pointer that "clicks" on enemies to damage them.
    • Blip is the same as the base character Epsilon, with the difference of shooting at a ridiculously faster rate. To unlock it you have to use :)'s perk Detatch to exit the window before activating the Final Boss, which sets into motion an elaborate line of events that ends with reorganizing the title screen's windows to unlock the character.
  • Signature Move: Nearly each character has a unique perk, which can be unlocked and upgraded with star tokens. They can only use perks that aren't their own through buying the "echo" action in the shop.
    • Epilson's "Bellow" pushes the main window outwards in all directions.
    • Zephyr's "Endure" grants it an invincible dash that deals damage if you run over enemies.
    • Bastion's "Torrent" turns its laser into a continuous beam of fire, and can be gradually upgraded to a Beam Spam of several lasers at once.
    • Nyx's "Halt" stops time for everything else for a few moments.
    • :) has "Detatch", which allows it to leave the game window briefly.
    • Mebo's "Propagate" doubles the amount of Mebos onscreen for a while.
  • Shout-Out: Smiley's face is one to the "YOU ARE AN IDIOT" computer virus. A secret white variant of the boss reinforces this by using a far closer color scheme.
  • Tennis Boss: One of the final boss ???'s attacks is taking the (now smaller) game window and throwing it at you. You need to shoot at it to launch it back and deal damage.
  • Viral Transformation: Miasma, a small lime green triangle with lines poking out of it, causes this. It only spawns when a boss is on-screen, and doesn't do much until you attack it. Once you do, all bosses onscreen are "infected" and start to resemble it. Infected bosses can infect other bosses, which results in fighting several back-to-back if you're unable to defeat an infected boss before the next one appears.
  • Walking Spoiler: "???", the secret Final Boss.
  • Wham Shot: A special weapon that charges up and launches a ball can be switched to from a secret where you align all perks. If you charge it up too much, it shatters a hole in the game window and the music abruptly cuts out. As soon as you move outside the window, the secret final boss "???" appears from behind it and starts fighting.
