D-Hopper (originally known as Dragon Hopper) is an Action-Adventure game developed by Intelligent Systems that was intended to be published by Nintendo for the Virtual Boy in late 1996. It is currently scheduled to be released through the Nintendo Switch Online's "Virtual Boy — Nintendo Classics" application in 2026.
The story surrounds the young Dorin, a dragon prince from Celestia who flees from his kingdom after a crooked prime minister imprisons Dorin's folks and girlfriend. As he retreated to safety, however, he plummets into a strange hole and lands in a place known as Faeron. From there on, Dorin must rescue the distressed fairies that inhabit this realm and master magic spells, in hopes of using these newfound gifts to return to back home and save his own people.
The game utilizes a top-down perspective similar to The Legend of Zelda titles like Link's Awakening and sees the player traversing through multi-layered maze-like corridors. As you seek dungeon items, talk with NPCs, and defeat monsters and bosses, you'll also collect Star Coins that can be used at shops to enter a Bonus Stage or increase your amount of available magic skills.
Tropes:
- Big Bad: The Evil Chancellor has imprisoned Dorin's family and girlfriend as part of a power grab, thus Dorin must overthrow him and free his kidnapped kin and girlfriend.
- Boss Banter: Each boss fight will start with the boss conversing with Dorin before attacking such as Dorin being called a "worthless sack of scales" by Cutter.
- Company Cross-References: Dorin travels across levels on a star, similar to HAL Laboratory's mascot platformer hero Kirby.
- Evil Chancellor: The game surrounds Dorin seeking to overthrow the prime minister who falsely imprisoned Dorin's family and girlfriend as part of his usurpation plot.
- Fall Damage: Averted for the most part as falling from a great height will not harm Dorin. But there are still some hazards that will cause him harm.
- Fantasy World Map: The game shows a map of the entire world that features the kingdom of Celestia and the fairy land of Faeron.
- Giant Enemy Crab: One of the bosses shown is a gigantic grab named Cutter who will attack Dorin after the boss banter.
- Jerkass: Cutter calling Dorin a "worthless sack of scales" was a mean-spirited thing to do.
- Names to Run Away from Really Fast: One of the bosses is a Giant Enemy Crab and if his name is indeed Cutter, you certainly would need to fight for your life before he cuts it short.
- Officially Shortened Title: The game's English title was changed from Dragon Hopper to D-Hopper due to another company, Push Gaming Product Limited, trademarking the name in the intervening time for a digital casino game.
- Player Character: The playable hero of the game is Dorin, a prince of dragons.
- Save the Princess: It's unclear if Dorin's girlfriend a princess in status, but you will have to save her after she was wrongfully imprisoned by the corrupt chancellor.
- Trash Talk: Cutter calls Dorin a "worthless sack of scales" in their pre-boss dialog.
