Schrödinger Field

The unstable rift generates a "Schrödinger field" that causes whatever it hits to shift into random possibilities in the multiverse. Starfleet develops shield upgrades that allow the crew of the Cerritos to remain unaffected, but the same can't be said for the hull, which shifts into various other classes before finally settling on the California-class once more as they near the center of the storm.
