A character is subjected to something which is clearly, obviously, incontrovertibly, and usually quite messily fatal, or at the very least extremely painful.
There's a moment's pause for comic effect...
And from the wreckage emerges a muffled "I'm OK.", sometimes accompanied by a thumbs-up. This trope is always Played for Laughs — if there is the least bit of ambiguity if something is Slapstick or dramatic, this trope serves to break the tension and yield to the Rule of Funny.
Compare/Contrast He's Okay, in which another character notes that the injured party isn't dead and in a usually serious situation.
In works where Nobody Can Die, this can be an Enforced Element — and also (as an added bonus) a comical means of Getting Crap Past the Radar. A character getting seriously hurt or killed by violence would be Family-Unfriendly and therefore unacceptable... but it they suffer the exact same violence and verbally declare they are okay? That's fine! Don't think about how they could be unaffected, just Take Our Word for It! This way, a work can display an event so violent No One Could Survive That! ...then quickly remind you that of course they did — what kind of show do you think you're watching? Compare Could Have Been Messy.

- After the Yellow Flag explodes for the first time Black Lagoon, Dutch calls out for his teammates to make sure they're still alive. Revy and Rock have already checked in, and after calling for Benny, Benny runs up through the doorframe to safety with a "miraculously, I'm alive!"
- Done in Fairy Tail, during the Oracion Seis/Nirvana arc when Lyon sacrifices himself to defeat racer, only to reappear a few episodes later, perfectly fine.
Lyon: Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.
- Lampshaded wonderfully in the CP9 arc of One Piece. After the entire crew gets smashed through a wall by a runaway train, Luffy laughs off the danger. The rest of the crew, buried in rubble, say "Don't be stupid... we're not rubber like you... there's no way we're... ABSOLUTELY FINE!" they burst out of the rubble at the last bit, with little more than superficial bruising.
- Dia in Pokémon Adventures occasionally crashes into something as a Running Gag. He then appears with Pokeballs in his eyes while saying "everything is fine". This is played for drama when he has his Disney Death.
- In the Act 1 Cold Open of Sailor Moon Crystal, this is subverted, after The Klutz Usagi's extended Pratfall Staircase Tumble down her household stairs and an Off Screen Crash.
Usagi's Mother: Are you alright?
Usagi: [yelling offscreen] I'm not alright! [enters rubbing rear] Ouuuuuch.

- In Billy & Mandy's Big Boogey Adventure, a squirrel says this after being bisected by the blade of Grim's scythe.
- A Bug's Life: While Flik's idea to ride dandelion fluff across the chasm seems brilliant, he slams directly into a rock afterward. But he's still quick to inform us: "I'm... OK!"
- Despicable Me 3: As he tucks Agnes (who vows to find a unicorn in the woods tomorrow morning) in her triple-decker bunk bed, Gru goes to walk away and forgets he's standing on a ladder, causing him to fall to the floor. He exclaims that he's okay, but Agnes is still fast asleep.
- Elemental: When Bernie and Cinder first arrive in Element City, they are unable to find a place that will accept them. They then find a broken down building up for sale and Bernie is excitedly running around the place. He then jumps on a weak piece of floor that collapses. He promptly sticks his arm out of the hole with a thumbs up, dropping the trope title. What makes this even funnier is the fact that, up to this point, they've only seemed capable of speaking fire language.
- The Emperor's New Groove: Kronk after falling off the throne platform trying to catch a snack. It happens to him again in Kronk's New Groove when he absentmindedly walks off a cliff while saying good night to his love interest Miss Birdwell.
- How to Train Your Dragon (2010): Fishlegs, after falling off a Gronckle, shouts "I'm okay!" Then the Gronckle falls on him, and he says "Less okay!"
- In The LEGO Batman Movie, a cat gets roasted by lava, yet still squeaks "I'm okay!" This reinforces that, despite the devastation being unleashed, this is a Nobody Can Die movie.
- In Monsters vs. Aliens B.O.B is repeatedly stepped on by the huge rampaging robot.
B.O.B: I got him you guys, I got him! [stomp] Don't worry, I'm wearing him down! [stomp] Hot dogs! Ha! [stomp]
- My Little Pony: Equestria Girls – Rainbow Rocks: At the end, after her second Smoke Out, Trixie tries to sneak away in the public, but slips and falls behind the bleachers because of her impractical dress. Then comes her voice...

- Barbie (2023): Stereotypical Barbie says this after falling off the roof of her house.
- Death Proof: After a tense car chase that had Zoë Bell frantically holding onto the hood of the car, it ends with the cars skidding off the road and one of the protagonists opening fire on their attacker. She gets back in her car as he drives away, and sits there with her friend, shaking, clearly agitated by the whole experience. Zoe is nowhere to be seen for about 15 seconds, until she pops up in front, waves, and quickly says "I'm okay!"
- Dracula: Dead and Loving It: Dracula falls down a flight of stairs, then tosses off an "I'm fine!" A moment later, you can see his shadow limping up the stairs behind him.
- Freddy Got Fingered: Andy (the kid who keeps getting hurt throughout the movie, says it after getting chopped to pieces by plane propellers. The line was very obviously dubbed in to supposedly avoid an NC-17 rating, despite never seeing Andy on screen again.
- Goosebumps: Lorraine hits a werewolf with her car, bewildered by the event that has just unfolded, she reassures her audience "I'm okay... [airbag inflates] I'm still okay!"
- In the opening sequence of Hot Shots!, a fighter pilot slips while trying to repair his craft at cruising altitude and gets racked by the tailfin at several hundred miles per hour. In a high-pitched voice he informs his co-pilot, "I'm okay!"
- How to Be a Latin Lover: Maximo's father is a trucker who has been driving all night to get back home. He starts nodding off as he approaches and drives straight through the house. After the truck comes to rest, he shouts out "I'm OK!" Then it explodes.
- It's a Wonderful Life: Uncle Billy drunkenly walks off screen, then we hear a crash. "I'm all right... I'm allllll right!" In reality it was a stagehand knocking something over off-camera and Thomas Mitchell improvising to save the take. The stagehand thought he would be fired; instead Frank Capra gave him a bonus.
- Monty Python and the Holy Grail: Concorde collapses after taking an arrow in the chest, but interrupts Lancelot's eulogy of him by saying "I'm not quite dead, sir."
- Not Another Teen Movie: Janey shouts this after she falls through the staircase into a basement and a table and lamp fall on top of her.
- In The Pink Panther Strikes Again, Inspector Clouseau vaults over a banister, falls down some stairs, and announces "That felt good."
- Subverted in Pulp Fiction, which is understandable in the post-rape context.

- Star Wars: In The Rise of Skywalker, C3PO is treated with the usual lack of consideration, lampshaded when our heroes fall through quicksand and end up in an underground cavern.

- In Waking the Witch, Savannah does this when she's been poisoned and the villain is forcing her to summon her angel mother.
Live-Action TV
- In one episode of The Big Bang Theory, Leonard hits his head while getting something from under the table at a restaurant.
Leonard: Yeah, I'm okay. Hey, did you spill ketchup?
Penny: No.
Leonard: I'm not okay! - In the Eureka episode "Welcome Back Carter", Sheriff Andy's car is suddenly crushed flat with him in it. "I'm OK" comes complete with thumbs up.
- Father Ted has Mrs. Doyle, who'd fallen down the stairs and been crippled earlier in the episode, fall down again (with a chorus of "OHHOLYMARYMOTHEROFGOD" to the thumps), get up and pronounce, "I'm cured!".
- Rachel does one of these on Friends in a first-season episode when she falls off her balcony—she ends up swinging by her ankle from the Christmas lights that she was taking down.
- This is Captain Man's catchphrase in Henry Danger. He is Nigh Invulnerable but can still feel pain.
- MythBusters:
- This trope is probably the major reason that Tory Belleci's infamous bike accident is considered an Amusing Injury and one of the funniest moments on the show.
- Adam also tends to do this, saying (often, even adding an "Ouch..." occasionally) "...I'm okay."
- They once blew out their crash dummy Buster in a controlled explosion to cause decompression in an airplane. Just as Adam and Jamie said they might have finally killed off their crash dummy, someone among the crew exploring the wreckage cried out "BUSTER MADE IT!", in a rare spot of real-life perfect timing.
- In The Red Green Show, Bill doesn't say (or at least isn't heard saying) "I'm OK", but he always gives a thumbs-up at the end of the segment to indicate that yes, he survived again.
- Frequently used by Raven Symone in the series That's So Raven. In one episode, however, after sustaining an injury from a skating accident, she says "I am not okay!"

- "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" from Bob Dylan's Bringing It All Back Home.
- "I'm OK" by Little Big is about a bar full of people getting progressively drunker (with the implication that many of them are Drowning Their Sorrows) and engaging in Alcohol-Induced Stupidity even as the chorus insists they are ok. Only in the last chorus does Sonya finally acknowledge that she is actually "drunk as fuck."

- In Scion, the Charisma Knack "Never Say Die" which lets you give your allies Willpower points equal to the damage you took by invoking this trope.
Theme Parks
- In The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad show at Universal's Islands of Adventure, it's a running gag for Kabob to say this whenever he falls down.
- Étincelle: The Curse of the Black Opal 4D movie from Futuroscope: After gaining Étincelle's superpowers, an attempt at flying leads to an Offscreen Crash. Alice gives a thumb-up from behind a sofa to reassure Teddy.

Video Games
- Played for laughs in Crash Twinsanity, where Cortex is knocked into a (seemingly bottomless) pit and shouts "I'm okay! The spikes broke my fall..."
- EDI says this verbatim in the Citadel DLC of Mass Effect 3. Her mobile platform suddenly short-circuits and essentially falls unconscious only to then pop back up saying that she's okay. Since one of her eyes is askew, Shepard and Joker aren't convinced.
- Coming home to Elena in Pandora's Tower when her Forced Transformation is still in the early stages will make her hurriedly tell Aeron to be careful not to slip in the purple ooze she's leaking on the floor, or not to come too close to her in case he gets messy himself. An example of this not being played for laughs; some variations on the scene are even quite heart-wrenching as she's obviously on the verge of freaking out completely, but still manages to be more worried over Aeron putting himself in harm's way for her sake.
- One of Eugene's dying quotes in Whacked! is "I'm okay!", although he then thinks to himself, "This sucks".
Visual Novels
- In the Tokimeki Memorial series, Miyuki Kotobuki is the master of this. No matter if the Ferris-wheel makes an unexpected brutal stop that makes her hit the cabin's floor hard, or if she's run over by trucks, or if she nearly passed out from training at DanceDanceRevolution for a whole day, continually, without eating or drinking (and getting her feet very grazed in the process; all of this to regain the trust of her partner who was angry at her lack of focus and left her), she'll always say, in a dazed voice and swirly eyes: "Daijoubi-, daijoubi-" (a Miyuki-version of "daijoubu", "I'm okay").
Web Animation
- DC Super Hero Girls: In "Fall into Super Hero High", from Killer Frost accidentally covering the ground in ice, Starfire and Star Sapphire slip and go into a Slippery Skid. Then, from offscreen, one of them says "I'm okay!"
- Final Fantasy VII: Machinabridged: Subverted. In Episode 21, Palmer tries to steal the Tiny Bronco, only to get hit by an oncoming truck. After a pause, he yells out "I'm okay!" and then gets his head sliced off by the Tiny Bronco's propeller blades.

This is a callback to the Strong Bad Email "kids' book", which had Strong Bad vandalizing the children's book version and writing "This blue guy died," on Señor's page.

- Team Sonic Racing Overdrive: A non-verbal example; after leaping out of his car to deflect a bomb directed at Sonic, Knuckles tumbles onto the road before getting back in his car. Afterwards, he gives Sonic a thumbs up and a confident grin while his face is missing a tooth and sporting some welts.
- TailsTube: In Episode 14, Tails and Whisper tell Tangle they need to get ready for the upcoming races. Tangle then rushes off-screen, crashing into something in the factory, which causes a lot of noise. She shouts out "I'm okay!" in the background, assuring her friends that's she's fine.

- Sleepless Domain: In the first chapter, Sally attempts to take out a large monster with her fire powers, which it proceeds to No-Sell before ramming Sally into a wall. Sally promptly gives her teammates a thumbs-up, to show that she isn't too badly hurt.

- Yu-Gi-Oh! The Abridged Series: During the Duelist Kingdom arc, there's a flashback to the scene where Kaiba jumps out of a several-meter-high window to escape Pegasus's goons. While they remark that there's no way he could've survived such a high fall, he announces that he's fine... but they refuse to believe him.
Goon 1: There's no way he could survive a fall like that!
Kaiba: [from far below] Actually, I seem to be okay.
Goon 2: Nope, he's definitely dead.
Kaiba: You guys are idiots!
Goon 1: At least we're not dead, like you!

- The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius: In the episode "Stranded", after getting stranded in Jimmy's hovercar in the middle of the ocean, Carl, Sheen, and Libby attempt to signal for help from a passing ocean liner. Mistaking a button for a flare gun, they accidentally launch a torpedo at the ship, blowing it up. Cue the mass "We're okay!!" from the passengers.
- Played with a few times in The Amazing World of Gumball, where an injured person is talkative enough to convey that they are alive, but still very much injured:
- In "The Allergy", when Mr. Small attempts to cure Darwin's constant sneezing using holistic medicine involving plugging two crystals in Darwin's nose. Darwin sneezes and accidentally knocks Rocky out of a tree, causing Rocky to declare "I'm not okay!"
- "The Copycats" ends with the Wattersons' doppelgängers running a burning truck full of gasoline off a bridge. Gumball shouts to them offscreen to see if they survived:
Gumball: Uh, you guys good?
Chi Chi: No!
Gumball: Eh, good enough. - "The Shippening" has Sarah destroy one of her drawings come to life by having it crumpled, torn an burned. The drawing tells her from off-screen that he's "still alive and in quite a lot of pain."
- In Bob's Burgers, the phrase is Tina Belcher's catchphrase: she says it almost every time she falls over or gets hurt.
- A played-with example in Danny Phantom. Every time one of Valerie's ghost hunting weapons accidentally goes off, her father hears it and calls her name, prompting her to call back "I'm okay!"
- Dave the Barbarian plays with this when two separate cottages are crushed by a rampaging monster. It can't be seen what happens to the occupants, but they both call out:
First Peasant: I'm still alive!
Second Peasant: I'm not... - Dora the Explorer: In "Dora's First Trip", there's a scene where Boots falls out of Tico's boat and into the river. After that, he says to Dora and Tico, "I'm okay!"
- Futurama: At the end of "War is the H-Word", it cuts to the credits as Bender deliberately sets off a bomb in his chest. We hear an explosion, followed by Bender shouting "I'm okay!"
- This was Eugene's catchphrase in Hey Arnold!, said from offscreen whenever he experienced some sort of horrible accident.
- Invader Zim's determination to play this for laughs in the episode "Game Slave 2" actually got creator Jhonen Vasquez on the wrong side of the network. The episode was supposed to end with Gaz's nemesis Iggins having crashed to the ground in an elevator car, but when informed that the character couldn't be left for dead, Vasquez made a Gainax Ending of it:
[W]e were told that Iggins had to be alive. So I decided that Iggins would fly out of the rubble like Superman. This actually resulted in lengthy discussions, meetings, and conference calls with higher-ups from the network, all because Iggins flies at the end. I mean, the kid is SO not dead, so very healthy that he now has the ability to FLY!! How much better can you get than that? They thought we were making fun of them. That's when I blew my head off in frustration and became a crime-fighting ghost.
- Characters in Johnny Bravo often say this after getting hurt. One notable example was in the Superhero Episode where a super-powered Johnny catches an airplane that was set to crash, then shakes loose all the packages of peanuts that were inside and tosses the airplane away where it crashes over the horizon in a huge explosion that was followed by a chorus of "We're okay!".
- On Jimmy Two-Shoes, after a character is dropped in a Shark Pool: "I'm okay...kinda."
- Stitch has a minor catchphrase in Lilo & Stitch: The Series after he gets hurt, "I'm OK! I'm fluffy!" Sometimes it crosses over with his famous illeism, replacing "I'm" with his name.
- The Loud House Lisa Loud often says some variation of this wherever one of her experiments explodes on her.
- Mao Mao: Heroes of Pure Heart: Virtually every time Mao Mao and company defeat the sky pirates, usually with them being blasted away or crashing in their air ship, they always shout in unison "We're okay!" afterwards.
- In Megas XLR, when the Glorft have Coop trapped, a buncha of drivers show to challenge the Glorft, only to get swung aside in a second, with one of the drivers stating they're all right.
- In Men in Black: The Series, one episode was set in a dream world where everything went the way that Jay liked. Part of this was Agent Kay being ultra incompetent: he would regularly be run over by some alien device run amok, and shout (from a distance) "I'm OK!" subverted when Kay crawls into sight—as nothing but a skeleton—and shouts, "I'm OK!" [looks down at himself] "Whoa, what happened here?"
- The creators of Phineas and Ferb commented in an interview that Disney will let them do all sorts of over-the-top slapstick as long as the victim vocally confirms their survival:
- Exaggerated in "The Fast and the Phineas", Phineas is in a NASCAR-like race and as a result of random destruction to the arena, most of the other cars go flying. They end up stacked artistically, some upside down. Then all the drivers pop out and simultaneously shout "We're okay!"
- In "Wizard of Odd", Suzie (playing the Wicked Witch of the East) repeatedly states that she's alive, even with the house right on top of her; everybody else ignores her.
- "Great Balls of Water":
- During the song "Extra-Ordinary", Candace mentions the interesting activities "underwater taxidermy, shopping for a suitcase". During the second of these, a shot is seen of Candace walking past with an alligator suitcase—the alligator looks exactly like it would in real life, except it has a handle, and its tail is holding a sign saying "I'm Okay!"
- In the same episode, a man falls to the ground from his upside-down house on the top of Loop-De-Loop Street and hits the ground with a loud crash, afterwards saying in a nonchalant tone: "I'm okay! Happens all the time!"
- "Just in case anyone is wondering what happened to old Doofenshmirtz, I'm okay!" (crash) "Okay, obviously not now."
- Played for laughs in Ruby Gloom, whenever the adventurous Iris crashes into something offscreen ("I'm good!") or when Misery gets struck by lightning ("Ow.")
- The Simpsons: In "Stop or My Dog Will Shoot", Bart's new pet python starts strangling Homer until he can barely breathe. Immediately after collapsing, Homer says "I'm okay" while sounding completely unharmed.
- Sofia the First has Prince Jin say this when he twice falls flat on his back due to his costume of heavy armour.
- A variation in Storm Hawks. A bunch of Blizzarians are playing around on snowmobiles, racing through ice caves. One of them decides to do a stunt by racing up the wall, leaping off, and grabbing a stalactite. As he and the other Blizzarians cheer, he lets go with his hands to do twin rocker signs, which causes him to slide off and plummet to the ground. There's a beat, then we see him lift his hand in another rocker sign, cheering. The other Blizzarians cheer along with him, while the Storm Hawks don't show much enthusiasm at all this.
- Time Squad subverts this in an episode involving the Wright brothers. In the end, when they unveil their latest invention; a plane powered by rockets, Orville (who spent the entire episode being the Butt-Monkey of all their failures) explodes in midair and crashes to the ground we get this:

Orville: I'm alright!

Orville: Okay... NOW I'M HURT [Beat] YES, DEFINITELY HURT! - Transformers: Animated: Lugnut says this in one episode after Megatron interrupts his Punch of Kill Everything to prevent him from destroying the Constructicons (then the Constructobots).
- Work It Out Wombats!: In "Secret Tunnels," Zeke trips inside the tunnels, then affirms that he's okay.
Real Life
- Jackie Chan's bonus reels often feature this, as he messes up one of his stunts and then jumps back up to indicate he's not (too badly) hurt. Humorously lampshaded in the Rush Hour (1998) outtake reel:
