Hooked on Pirates and Slayers
is a crossover fic between Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Once Upon a Time (2011) by BloodyTink. Originally published on August 6, 2013, it is a six-chapter Dead Fic with its latest update being published on May 20, 2016.
Taking place years after the finale of Buffy (with several things being changed to suit the author's preference) and during the second season of Once Upon a Time, it centers around Faith the vampire slayer who has been raising her twin children, Iris Willow Lehane and Colin Liam Lehane, for nine years. Unbeknownst to most people, the twins' father is the pirate Captain Hook, whom Faith met and fell in love with when she was trapped in Neverland for a while. Faith is still bitter about how their relationship ended, but the chance of her keeping it a secret forever disappears when the pirate shows up in New York, followed by a warning that the evil Peter Pan is after the twins.
Hooked on Pirates and Slayers contains examples of:
- Commonality Connection: Faith remarks that she and Willow weren't originally close when they first work together until Faith's temporary turn to the dark side, but became so after reuniting to fight the First and Faith finds out that Willow went dark for a while as well during her absence.
- Crossover Couple: Faith from Buffyverse and Hook from Once Upon a Time used to be an item for about two weeks, and they still have lingering feelings in the present.
- Disappeared Dad: Hook is absent from his and Faith's children's lives since Faith only finds out that she is pregnant after she leaves Neverland. As she has no way or desire to contact him, she just tells most people that it is a result of a one-night stand. Hook actually would love to be a father and tries to do his part once he finds out nine years later.
- A Glass in the Hand: When Willow and Angel bring up Hook by name to Faith when they all are cleaning up the birthday plates, Faith snaps and literally snaps the plate in her hand in half.
- Hairpin Lockpick: Hook escapes from his cell in the slayer school by snatching Iris' barrette and picking the lock with it.
- Honorary Aunt: Willow and Angel are referred by Faith's children as "Aunt Willow" and "Uncle Angel" since they helped Faith with her pregnancy and raising them.
- Internal Reveal: Readers, along with Faith, Willow, and Angel, know from the start that Hook is Iris and Colin's father, but keep it a secret for Faith's sake. Emma only finds out from Faith in chapter 3 while Hook realizes it from seeing the resemblance in chapter 4. Chapter 5 has Faith and Hook finally revealing it to everyone else including Iris and Colin themselves.
- Let Me Get This Straight...:
- There's a brief time skip between the second and third chapter, the latter beginning with Emma saying "So, let me get this straight," before recapping what Willow tells her and Neal about Faith's life during the skip.
- Hook's first scene in chapter 6 starts with him already catching up with Faith and summarizing the part he doesn't like from what he has heard between chapters.Hook: Let me get this straight. You told our children that I was some random stranger you met one night and never saw again. You painted me like some heartless bastard!
- "Near and Dear" Baby Naming: The twins' middle names are taken from Willow and Angel's names, as they are Faith's closest friends during her pregnancy.
- Percussive Therapy: Since Faith is upset about meeting Hook again and goes on her own, Willow tells Emma that she can find Faith in the gym, probably beating up a punching bag out of frustration. When Emma gets there, she finds it's not just a punching bag that Faith has destroyed in anger.
- Punched Across the Room: Upon their reunion, Faith punches Hook so hard he is sent flying through the wall.
- Shout-Out:
- "Iris" by Goo Goo Dolls is heavily alluded in the fic. The first chapter's title, "You Feel Me Somehow", is taken from the song's lyrics. Faith's daughter is named Iris after the song. Faith sings it back in Neverland while still together with Hook, which is why it's referred to as the pair's song, and keeps singing it to her children ever since they are in her womb because it always calms them down.
- Faith affectionately calls Henry "Short Round" in the second chapter.
- The third chapter is titled "Pirates, Slayers and Parents Oh My!", a play on the famous quote from The Wizard of Oz.
- Spared by the Adaptation: Due to the author's preference, Cordelia and Fred are alive and well rather than being long dead during the events of Angel.
- Strong Family Resemblance: Iris is described as looking like a female version of her father Hook while Colin resembles his mother Faith.
- Surprise Party: The first chapter is about a surprise birthday part for Faith, which Colin accidentally already talks about to her in the morning. Thankfully, it is still executed well-enough that the party-goers still manage to surprise Faith when she comes home.
- Vagueness Is Coming: Giles' part in the plot starts with mentioning how he hears from a seer about an upcoming battle, except the seer is very vague about it so he has to do some book-based research on his own.
