Tony the Tiger (Advertising)

"They're grrrr-eat!"
— Tony the Tiger's famous catchphrase.

Tony the Tiger is the mascot of Frosted Flakesnote , a cereal by Kellogg’s, which is a sugary take on Corn Flakes. He has been appearing in TV commercials ever since the cereal was introduced in the 1950s. His catchphrase is "They're grrrr-eat!" which he says at the end of the commercials, and is sometimes said in unison with other people.

Later commercials, such as in the 2000s, would have him appear alongside children training with the "Mighty Mighty Tiger" jingle, all while repeating his "They're grrrr-eat!" catchphrase at the end, and the other slogan being "Earn your stripes."

Commercials featuring Tony the Tiger provide these grrrr-eat examples of:

  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal:
    • Tony's only article of clothing is a red bandana with his name on it in black letters.
    • In the British Frosties adverts from the 1980's, Tony's sidekick Tom Cat wears a red bandana as well.
    • The British Frosties adverts also feature Achoo Rabbit, who wears a pair of glasses.
  • Beach Episode: One British Frosties advert has Tony and Tom Cat hanging out at the beach. When they turn their backs to surf, Tigerman shows up in a dune buggy to steal the Frosties secret formula. Tony and Tom foil his plan by chasing after him on their surfboard.
  • Catchphrase: All together now: "They're grrrr-eat!"
  • Cereal-Induced Superpowers: The "Supercharged" commercials would feature Tony eating the cereal, getting muscles and lighting in the background, followed by him doing a sport or activity flawlessly.
  • Cowboy Episode: One British Frosties advert features Tony and Tom Cat in the Old West, where the former foils Tigerman's attempt to steal the Frosties secret formula.
  • Friend to All Children: Tony is always seen training with the kids in sports in most commercials.
  • Last-Name Basis: Tony the Tiger’s last name is Tony, hence why his parents are named Mama and Papa Tony.
  • One of the Kids: Tony is often seen hanging out with children or training and doing sports.
  • Roger Rabbit Effect: In some commercials, he appears in live-action sequences alongside children and teenagers while he is still animated.
  • Shoddy Knockoff Product: In the British Frosties adverts from the 1980's, Tony's nemesis was Tigerman, who developed his own knock-off cereal called Fake Flakes. Unfortunately for Tigerman, Fake Flakes tasted terrible because they lacked the secret formula that Frosties had.
  • Thriller on the Express: One British Frosties advert has Tony and Tom Cat travel on a train. Tigerman disguises himself as a conductor so that he can steal the Frosties secret formula, but Tom sees through his disguise and he and Tony successfully recover the formula.
