Oubliette
A downloadable game for Windows and Linux
In times of peril such as these, rumors return that the mythical First King of ages long past still slumbers in his tomb at the bottom of the Oubliette...
Featuring public domain artwork by Sidney Sime and Harry Clarke
Instructions:
- WASD to move, Q and E to turn. No mouse movement
- F is the hotkey for the Fight button, and R is the hotkey for both Rest and Flee.
- Press the number keys 1-4 or click on a character's Action button to cycle their actions. Each class has slightly different abilities both in combat and out.
- Mages can tend wounds, but resting will eventually restore health as well once a character reaches full stamina. They can also cast Chain Lightning which can do an enormous amount of damage but also consumes a lot of stamina.
- Thieves have a chance to automatically begin battle in a hidden state, from here every successful attack will automatically deal critical damage.
- Warriors' Multi-Attack can hit multiple enemies of lower level than them. They can also Guard Others to prefer that enemies attack them.
- Progress is not saved and there is no meta-progression, you have to finish the game in a single sitting. As long as you play carefully and know when to run from encounters you can't beat, every map should be possible though an unlucky hit from a powerful enemy can always ruin your run.
- Alt+Enter to toggle fullscreen
This was my first time going and doing procedural generation like this. Debugging it was a huge pain but the results are pretty cool, if a bit samey. There is still one bug whereby the map will generate too few rooms making it very easy to reach the tomb, but there shouldn't be any situation where a map can't be cleared. The core of the game is a repurposed prototype made for a blobber last year, view the initial commit on Github to see the starting point.
This game was an absolute blast to make, I am definitely looking forward to making more blobbers in the future. I may expand on this one in the future but I also have many other ideas that suit the format really well.
