A Tale of Crowns
Chapter Fourteen has been released!
A Tale of Crowns is a high fantasy romance with Middle Eastern roots, both on pc as well as mobile! It’s an entirely text-based novel, with choices throughout to shape both your main character’s personality and skills as well as influence their relationships with others. There are four love interests for you to choose from, both female as well as male, each with their own stories and secrets for you to uncover!
I will release each chapter as I finish it, so the story will be a continuous work in progress. It will not be available for download until the entire story is finished.

CONTENT WARNINGS: Depictions of violence, death, trauma, body horror, implied sexual content, and animal cruelty. Safe to play for those 16 years and older.
The story takes place in Arsur, a fictional empire within a fantasy universe that draws inspiration from historical settings in the Middle East. Much of it is based on Kurdish culture, drawing from my own experience as a Kurdish woman.
Your character is 25 years old and was born and raised in Arsur, where magic is considered a skill no different from reading or writing. Gender, sexual orientation, and race have no bearing on social position or class; it is instead only based on wealth and level of education.
The Arsurian Empire itself is overseen by a single ruler known as the Crown. Unlike traditional monarchies, however, the title is not inherited through blood. Whenever the Crown dies, their famed golden eyes pass on to the one chosen by the spirits of this world to be the new Crown: this appears to happen at random, as Crowns in the past have ranged from the poorest farmer to the wealthiest noble.
Their parents murdered and the previous Crown of Arsur assassinated, your character finds themselves on the run as they’ve been bestowed with the golden eyes that mark them as the new Crown.
Unseen enemies at their heels, will they succeed as the Crown, or will they lead to the downfall of the Empire?
At the beginning of the story, you’ll have the opportunity to customize your Crown’s name, pronouns, sexual orientation, and their skill in magic. You can also customize many parts of your Crown’s appearance: hair color, hair texture, hairstyle, skin color, height, and clothing style are all up to you and will be reflected in the story as well.
Their ethnicity and culture is locked in as Kurdish/Middle Eastern. The Crown is also locked in as a person of color, as is in line with the setting - their specific race is up to the player to imagine.
As for your Crown’s personality, there are twelve different character traits in total, six of which will be decided based on the choices you make in-game. This will subsequently change your Crown’s behavior during story and romance scenes.
Depending on what your Crown’s sexual orientation is, the gender of the love interests will change accordingly to match that. There are four of them in total, and each love interest will have their own route which you will get to choose from at the end of the common route.

The Sorcerer; Rêzan/Rozerîn
The Crown’s Sorcerer, widely regarded to be a prodigy and expected to become the most powerful magus in the Empire.

The Hero; Xelara/Xelef
A legendary mercenary and the leader of the Crescent Blades, whose exploits were chronicled in song. Also known as the Pale Sword.

The Protector; Ashti/Azad
Once a peerless soldier in the Imperial Army, now promoted to the Royal Protector of the Crown due to their unrivaled skill and exceptional integrity.

The General; Dara/Delal
The General of the Imperial Army, known for many strategic victories in warding off attacks from hostile nations.

I already rated this years ago, but I feel like making another comment now with the new chapters:
As an ace person, I really appreciate A's characterization as romantically driven/slow burning. They're really sweet and well-written, as I'm sure the other ROs are as well. The wait for new chapters always kills me, but all good things take time. Thank you for your story!
Spoilers:
I'm specially anxious for the fluff potential camping in cold mountains allows, I'm sure they're a little jealous of R's bracelet. I hope we get to find a pet someday as well, just to raise togetherIt's not letting me save :(( Like the button to save/restart/settings jst doesn't exists. If I hover under the credits button a small speech bubble saying 'save' 'restart' 'setting' appreares but it doesn't let me click on any of them. I'm playing on web and my friend who's also playing on web does not have this problem.
But anyways, the writing is really good and I love the characters so far and the world bulding. <3
Sorry to hear that!! It may be one of your extensions causing the problem? You could try turning some off to find out the culprit or try playing on a different browser!
Yes, it was one of my extensions. I can save now :D Thank you so much!!!
i think i just found my latest thing to fixate on! thank you so much for making this i really love it so far
Нереальный писательский гений...
Прохождение растянулось на несколько дней. И это было... вау....
Thank you so much!! I'm glad it could give you several days' worth of entertainment 🫶🏼💖
Буду с нетерпением ждать продолжения <3
I still come back to replay this every few months, regardless of whether there's been an update. The worldbuilding is immaculate and the romance is addictive. R is my greatest weakness.
Thanks so much, that's high praise!! 💖💖
so happy to see this game is still being updated!!! YAY new chapter
Glad to hear you're still checking in for it 🙏🏼💖
ZIRYAN !! This man interrupting mc with xelef every single time is killing mee😭
Jokes aside though, I seriously LOVED this game. I've spent like a couple days trying everybody's route out and GEEZZZZ the scene with Azad and Xelef had me melting.. Rêzan and Dara are such cuties too. I love the slow burn in their routes. AWAITING MORE!!🙏
Aw, thank you!! 💖 I'm working on CH15 as we speak so hopefully the wait won't be too long haha
I'm using the latest version of Chrome on an android phone. When I try to toggle from light theme to dark, it doesn't let me. I select the option, the option blinks and stays the same. This has also happened to me with another interactive fiction game. I wonder if it's an issue with Twine Sugarcube and android/chrome (if Sugarcube is what you used to make the game).
I would recommend to try a different browser. I've noticed Firefox gives the least issues (both on pc and mobile)!
i adore this game and i adore D but i am growing so exasperated with not understanding how to raise romance / move away from being unsteady. it sucks feeling like i need a guide (which doesn't exist) in order to see all the content for the route i'm on.. especially with an LI as mercurial and closed off as D. apart from this, i want to truly commend you on your writing, it's fantastic and the world building you've done is so cohesive and impressive. looking forward to upcoming chapters. <3
It's difficult with D. What I do is save before making any decision that involves him, so I try them all and I'm constantly reviewing how the relationship with him is going.
I'm not someone who leaves comments on games, usually, but omfg "A Tale of Crowns" has me in a chokehold. I started playing just for funsies, but the moment I finished my first route, I had to play all the others too.
Every single one is amazing and unique; it's impossible for me even to make a rating, but I can say with certainty that D route is by far my favorite (unexpectedly so). That doesn´t mean the others aren't as good, but it's just that D´s route has a kind of yearning the others don´t (at least for me). It's funny that their route is my fav, considering I played it last, because honestly, they aren't the type of character I go for in romances, so the tension, the longing, the forbidden romance, the clash between what they have to do v.s. what they really want, all of that was so unexpected and out of my expectations.
I still love the other routes too, they all have their own kind of longing (that I love), but D´s just *cheff kiss*
There are so many things I want to say about this game, like how much I love the way politics are handled, or how fascinating the writing is and how much it's able to convey to the reader, or how beautifully written all the characters are, and yet I can't find the right words to express all of that.
Thanks for creating this game! It's one of my favs. I'm looking forward to the rest of the chapters and seeing how the history develops!!
Thanks so much for this lovely comment!! I'm especially glad you enjoyed the game enough to try out all the routes 💞💖
This game came to mind suddenly after not checking up on it in some years. This is the best interactive game I've ever played! Time to continue my A route <3
When he interrupted, I started screaming and kicking my feet out of anger. I was so close so close everyone.
SPOILERS(?) FOR D'S ROUTE IN CH.14
"You'd almost call it pitiful: the Crown who has learned to stand tall and tower over everyone over this past month discards his pride so easily now, choosing instead to sit at Dara's feet like a dog hoping for even a scrap from its master. But what else can you do? The hold he has on you is unbreakable."
CHERRY. CHERRY OH MY GODDDDDDDDDDDDDDD WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS LINE?!?!?!? I AM GOING CLINICALLY INSANE OVER THEM AURGHHHHHGHGGHHHH
Awwwww, how'd you get that?? ^-^
i've maintained a high & steady relationship with D throughout my playthrough!! :^)
I discovered this game years ago, when it was still on chapter 7. I didn't know any English back then and could barely play it.
three days ago, I suddenly remembered it, and now I'm already on chapter 14 and WOW, this game is wonderful!!!
but can someone PLEASE tell me how do I get a high relationship with D???
I'M STUCK AT "He feels bare before you. You have a steady relationship" and I'm about to cry because I feel like I'm missing the most intimate scenes. 😭
That is the highest possible relationship you can get right now, actually! And steady = high, so you're all good ✨
tsym for replying!!! I was worried for nothingg haha
I'm a huge fan, thanks for all your hard work on this game. really excited for the next chapters ❤️
A lot of people have talked about guides for romances, but I was curious if there are any plans for a guide on the outcomes of choices not related to romance. For example, the outcomes of the choices for... SPOILERS
...telling the nobility, public, and/or Kham about the assassination attempt.
I won't be making any guides for the game (beyond the walkthrough I made for how to get a love interest locked in, that is). Players can feel free to make those guides themselves for others if they want 🙏🏼
In one of my playthroughs, I decided to tell everyone about the assassination attempt, and the consequences of the breakout were worse. I don´t know if it´s because I told everyone, or something else influenced that result tho
Some time ago fans discuseed that having the public be priority and not the nobles is the best outcome. I think telling the public, not the nobles and to keep the prisoners in the palace will only have one guard injured instead of the people or nobles
Hey! What game making platform did you use to make this- I'm trying to make my own text based game an I am STRUGGLING since I don't know how to code sadly- Please send assistance, I adore your work and you inspired me to do what you did- just with my own characters and plot- I don't steal other's work.
You can find all the details in the Credits page in the game!
Alright!! Thank you so much :) have a good day!!
another aspiring IF author who doesn’t know how to code!
i salute you, friend. Good luck with your IF, hope it turns out well!
Thanks! I hope everything goes well for you also :D
I just finished my first playthrough (charming, kind, intuitive, adventurous, assertive) romancing Xelef! What an incredible story! Immense replayability, lovely fleshed out characters, a triumph in writing!
I have a question about how to interpret relationship status with our RO. I can get Xelef to where he Cares about me and is worried he's undeserving of me at the point where we discuss his mom's dagger. If I push the issue it remains at that status, versus if I let it go, the status description changes to he REALLY likes me. But that was the status that came before the caring/worrying status. Is NOT pushing the issue "demoting" the relationship? The relationship is steady in both cases.
First, thanks so much for the kind words!
As for your question: yep, that's a step back from their relationship status. Don't think of it as pushing the issue, and it's not really about the dagger either. It's more so about the fact that X is clearly hiding something incredibly important, which includes severe political ramifications which has caused problems for the Crown on multiple occasions, as well as being emotionally unavailable and distant.
If the Crown just lets it go and makes no further effort to close that emotional gap and hold X accountable, as well as showing X that they want to know the real them and not just the performance they put on, then the relationship remains surface-level. However, it still falls within the acceptable threshold of romance points that keeps the relationship steady, so it's not a problem yet. Hope that gives you some understanding!
Okay that's great! Follow up question(s):
I noticed that the more we flirt with each of the characters in the common 4 chapters, the more options we unlock to get to know them better. If we choose to act platonically/friendly rather than romantically, it doesn't unlock those dialog options. How come? Is it because you need romance points to progress through the game, or is there a reason for it other than game mechanics?
Secondly, could you please tell me the highest level relationship you can have before picking your LI at the end of chapter 4? It feels like X has more levels of friendship than the others? The highest phrase I've gotten for each is:
X: "(S)he really likes you" (or maybe it's without the "really")
A: "(S)he's Intrigued"
D: "(S)he's reassured"
R: "(S)he's curious to see how you'll do as the crown" (I've chosen to ride with A most of the time)
Piggybacking on that, do you need to get all 10 points throughout the first 4 chapters with any given RO in order to get the highest level romance by the end of chapter 14? Or can you miss ONE point and still get there?
Lastly, and I understand if it's too spoiler-y to answer, but would you be willing to tell me what the highest relationship status phrase is for each of the LIs by the end of chapter 14?
Obviously I'm enjoying this very much!
I keep getting the bad ending in Chp4 💔 WHAT AM I DOING WRONG LMAO. I'VE DONE IT LIKE 3 DIFFERENT TIMES AND IT KEEPS GIVING ME THE BAD ENDING 😭 I wanna keep playing but I have no idea what I've done wrong 😔
I FIGURED IT OUT 🙏. I'm just stupid and didn't have enough interactions to unlock a li option at the end💔
Hi! Sorry if this has already been answered... do you know how long this game is planned to be in full? I am trying to get a sense of how completed it is at present. Thanks so much, looking forward to playing!
The full game will likely be somewhere between 26-30 chapters, so we're just about halfway through ✨
Everytime life gets really bad, I come back to this game. Idk how many times I've done this particular story, but it's gotta be dozens by now. Thank you writing a home away from home🥲🩷
Thanks so much for the kind words 💖
i made an account to comment this but ive got a theory (Spoiler Warning)
i think all the strange happenings are tests from the person we are going to see. Also i think if we look back the farmer will also not have a face. Im so excited for the next chapter
no matter how much security i have, the prisoner kills someone in chapter 9 😭 does it depend on some other variable?
i might be wrong because it's been a while since i've played the earlier chapters, but i think it depends on whether or not you chose to keep the prisoner in the palace dungeons or send him away to a different prison
I tried that too :( either way, someone dies for me. Thank you though!
here is the official walkthrough post cherry posted on her tumblr! i hope this helps you :)
https://ataleofcrowns.tumblr.com/post/707269344491601920/hi-with-the-release-of-...
omg I love this so much, please update soon I already miss Dara <3
I love D so much that I didn't even realize I had an unsteady relationship until the last chapter 💔
Yummy
I love this so much! The writing is fantastic and the descriptions of culture are so immersive! The diversity in character customization is great, but I have a small request (unless it would be complicated to do); I'm albino and cannot be fully represented by the present options. Hope this doesn't sound ungrateful- I've been able to enjoy most of it anyway! :)
That's not something I'm planning on adding at the moment, but I'm glad you enjoyed the game regardless! 🙏🏼
In my opinion there is NOT enough talk about Ashti (aka Azad)
THEY MAKE ME SO HAPPY EVERYTIME I READ THEIR ROUTE!
My rankings of ros
ASHTI (Azad)
Xelara (Xelef)
Rozerin (Rezan)
Delal (Dara)
sorry I'm not the grumpy type for all the D fans
When this is updated, I will, in fact, be the first to play.
for those who focused on the people(and not being able to unlock the special choice with the historian), did you choose to agree to the proposar or remain impartial? personally, it sounds pretty promising, but im very curious on what you guys chose and why
Agreed
I remained impartial because I don't trust nobles 😭 I had a gut feeling that granting them special favours was gonna bite me later
Ishrah and Siham are so bestie material! I love them!!
If people disagree about this there is something heavily wrong with them
Latest chapter was amazing as always. im so invested and attached to these characters. take care of yourself! don't burn yourself out <3
PLEASE MORE. Also sometimes the save doesn’t work. I swear I will cry if it gets rid of my saves again
simply exporty and import ur last save
how….
umm...there is an option in the saves menu to do that, just click on "Export Saves" to download the save. When required you can simply open it by clicking the "Import Saves" button in the same menu. Hope this helped. Take Care
thank you but I also have to restarttttt 😭😭😭😔
This remains to be SO SO GOOD and I have a theory for this chapter BUT I don't know how to hide spoilers on this thing. So:

Between the farmer and the non-human guard, I'm wondering if this is all part of a hidden trial from the spirits. Which would be more innocent a reading, I imagine..but perhaps..there's also something far more sinister afoot too. Hehehe.
REGARDLESS of what happens this story is incredible, and it remains so. What a fantastic update. And AZAD, MY DARLING. So worth the wait and the continued *sort of* wait. There is definitely an inner romantic hiding in there.
SPOILERS
i totally think it's to do with the peris, honestly. especially after the revelation of kham being involved in blue siren dealings... perhaps someone has been sent to watch the crown, either by her or her mother??

OOh good call! I didn't consider that.
I finally got the chance to get back into the story. I honestly really love how painfully heavy the decisions are in your story. Like... I love playing the royals in many games but none feels as difficult in deciding which path to take than going through your story! I definitely feel the weight of each choice. I both rejoice on how amazing it feels and how much anxiety it makes me suffer. I love it!
And goodness gracious the way you let the slow burn happen between the MC and R. I felt like I needed to step out of the room and let them have their moments together with how sweet they were. People need to stop interrupting them I swear haha!
So many things going on for the MC, so many worries yet it all feels right for someone who has taken the mantle of the Crown that has been left vacant for years. I'm enjoying the story so much. You have a way with your writing that makes it very difficult to stop reading!
P.S The middle answer for the soldier has left me filled with warmth in my chest. I didn't expected to feel so much in something so familiar/relatable to me in a way especially with the family.
Gosh, I adore your story so much. Thank you for writing this amazing IF! I hope to continue read more! ♥
Yep, I agree with you on that one, the middle answer for sure felt more grounded and realistic to me, imo.
Take Care
R MENTIONED!!!
I just played chapter 14 with my A save and was so impressed by your writing style. Always loved AToC for the way you make the world feel so real and immersive. This chapter the way you describe the world was *chefskiss* awesome. And the moment with the soldier, asking the crown for advice was literally something of the best literary moments I read the whole year. If you ever write a book please let us know here. I'd immetiately buy / read anything from you. Hope you're keeping well and stay safe. Have a wonderful advent season. :)
Hello, just finished playing through chp 14 on my A save and then starting entirely new playthrough with X to refresh myself on the whole story. And I’ll probably do another playthrough on D’s route after that (where I’ll make the crown extremely short because I’m a sucker for size difference). I probably won’t do an R route playthrough, though I do love them they feel more like a best friend than a love interest, at least when it comes to my personal preferences. I’m really enjoying your writing and worldbuilding and I can’t wait to see where we’re headed.
But I did just want to let you know I encountered a minor continuity error. In chp 14 when the group departs for the expedition, the crown and R notice a bird that uses magic to create illusory doubles while in flight and R makes a comment about always wondering which is the real bird. The crown tells R it’s the one that doesn’t shimmer at the edges and says their mother was the one who taught them that. This was a great character moment and I wouldn’t have noticed anything wrong with it if after finishing the chapter I hadn’t immediately started a fresh playthrough. In the first chapter if you ride with R, they show off their horse’s internal magic and the crown expresses surprise that animals can use magic and thinks of it as something their parents never bothered to teach them, directly contradicting the moment in chp 14. Sorry if that was a needlessly long-winded explanation!
Oh, tysm, that's a great catch!! It's been like 5+ years since I wrote the start of the story so sometimes I forget the details of what I established prior, I'll make sure to adjust the scene with the horses to account for that 🙏🏼
Woah i forgot how long you have been doing this. Respect to your work, truly...
also I enjoyed playing the chapter too, I adore the way you have chosen to put in certain tests for the crown amidst of the travels. Hope to see more content soon, though dont tire yourself out.
Take Care
That is an amazing catch. Dang, mate. Impressive stuff.
im so attached to this game 🤧 GOSH i adore Dara. the slow burn really edging me atp, but your writing is amazing!
Thanks so much 🫶🏼🫶🏼 Hang in there D romancers!!
might as well play A's route since yk 2nd favourite, but considering your writing ill prolly enjoy it js as much 🫶
We have to be in the process of being tested by... the Spirits? The mountains? Şahmaran? Something else? Idk but this is a test-
well.. I was not expecting that. Not sure what I was expecting in the first place, but..
We’re not only special due to the fact that we were chosen by the Spirits to be the Crown, but extra “special” because.. Oh, joy.
I loved the late night scene with X, I reckon that it’s my new favourite scene in all of AtOC!
10/10, CH.14 was awesome. Having the Crown’s mental state be decided by a choice we made all the way back in CH.6 is just so cool to me! Anywho, now it’s time to go read the rest of the routes lol
Tysm!!💖💖 And yeah, I really enjoyed writing X's scene this chapter in particular, for multiple reasons haha. Hope you enjoy the rest!
If you do not mind me asking, what was the choice? I looked back, but I can't figure it out for the life of me! Furthermore, how does it affect the Crown's mental state?
I’m 99% sure it was one of the first scenes in CH.6, the one where the sea/water is trying to drown you. You’ve for like three options, and they just give you different option paths for your mental state in CH.14
Ohhh that makes sense! I figured the choices were going to affect something, but I wouldn't have expected it so far ahead. Thank you!
Hiya cherry!! I'm not sure if this question has been asked before, or at least something similar, but I've been really curious. Since there are going to be a good chunk of chapters in the future, as well as a numerous amount of choices that lead to different outcomes, would there ever be an option to "skip" chapters?
To give a bit of background for this question, I've found myself going through the chapters and experimenting with different options, and if I forget to save that specific option, then I must redo the whole story depending on which chapter I left off on.
Now, this isn't a complaint by ANY means, and I understand that it could possibly take awhile to even do, but I saw it on another IF and just wanted to know if you'd ever implement it into your own!
I think maybe that could be doable for the first 4 chapters? But after that the coding would take more time since the story splits into separate romance routes, and diverges with plot variations later on too 🧐
It would have to be a QoL feature to look into after the game is finished, I'd say!
That makes sense !! I can't wait to see what you'll do with the game once it's finished :D
