This was a really fun surprise the concept of powering up the boss instead of the player is innovative and refreshing for a jam entry. The music and art style give it a lot of personality, and the gameplay loop is engaging despite some rough edges. I really appreciate seeing someone tackle a bullet-hell idea like this, because it’s not something you often see in jams.

That said, a few areas could be improved. The camera feels too zoomed in, which makes it easy to lose track of the boss and end up firing at nothing. Some of the upgrades, like bullets or new attack patterns, didn’t feel impactful enough, and after a while the progression seemed less like meaningful choices and more like a list that would eventually fill up regardless. On top of that, the battles could feel repetitive after multiple runs, since the difficulty curve doesn’t change much and some technical issues (like slowdown) interrupted the flow.

Even with these limitations, it’s a creative, well-polished game with a lot of potential to grow into something bigger. I’ve been working on a project with a similar idea movement tied to bullet recoil so maybe you’d be interested in trying my jam game too. It could give you a different take on a similar concept.

Nice game! I like the mechanic that you are not upgrading yourself but the boss, well done!

This game gives me Touhou vibes 🤩.

Super cool game! I really like the artstyle and the "bullet hell" gameplay. Upgrading your boss is a cool mechanic. The game fits into the theme well, and is certainly fun to play. Well done dude, be proud :)

Really captivating, I could have gone on for ages! Cool concept and super fun!

This is a strong one! Overall it's well-executed, especially for the time constraint. You should both be proud. :)

Things I liked:

- Great music, and a large soundtrack especially for a jam game

- It's a great concept for a bullet hell, well worth expanding into a larger game. It's interesting that you're upgrading the boss instead of yourself!

- Graphic style and sound look great, and the overall artistic direction feels polished.

- I like that there are many choices to upgrade your boss.

Problems I had:

- My biggest problem is that the game gets pretty repetitive. The boss battles start out at a medium difficulty rather than easy and doesn't get that much harder with the upgrades. The battles aren't unreasonably long, but over and over again, the same battle gets old. I think a little less cooldown on the player's bullets, or the ability to do more damage, would help speed things up a bit.

- My controls briefly got stuck walking to the right. I'm not sure how. I fixed it by pressing the right arrow key again and letting it go. I have 2 monitors and I was playing in fullscreen on one of them.

- It would be nice if you could see your character's hitbox. There is currently some guesswork as to whether a bullet will hit you. The way Deltarune does it is clever: your hitbox shows up as an overlay when bullets are near.

- Also, the bullets are so large that sometimes it's not feasible to skillfully duck and weave around them; you have to try to outrun them or get as far away as possible.

- When you die, it seems that your progress (the enemy difficulty) is reset to 0. I wasn't a fan of this. This also happens if you go past the max in level 2.

- Music on both levels loops incorrectly

Wishes for future development (if you decide to do more):

- I would love it if you could upgrade yourself instead of just your enemy. Maybe the enemy gets WAY stronger with each upgrade, but you can also use the difficulty points to buy upgrades for yourself. That way it's like the Vampire Survivors thing where the adversaries are ridiculously overpowered, but so is the player.

- I would also like to see the option to either upgrade past the max or just stop at the max. Like once you reach 300 difficulty points, you can move on to the next level, or you can choose some of the upgrades you skipped last time, and get other rewards in the next level for doing so.

Great job on this entry. Again, it's got a fun concept!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! Glad you enjoyed the presentation of the game. Some of your issues can be answered; the game is built to be repetitive (that's just the nature of it), your controls got stuck because you clicked outside of the game window (this un-"focus"es the game on your computer, repeating any input you had pressed until you click back in), we aren't really fans of showing important game hitboxes or dev tools such as showing the hitbox (but thanks for the suggestion!), there is a dash move that is invincible if you press space (this will easily help avoiding the tightly packed attacks (in fact it's the intention)), the difficulty resetting when you die is intentional (it helps make sure you didn't pick such unfathomably difficult upgrades that respawning the boss with them would be annoying and way too hard), the difficulty resetting after beating the genie is a bug (read the description for more information) however the gist is that you didn't miss any gameplay.

I enjoyed this game alot!

Love the concept and art direction! ✨
the boss designs are cool af, love the color palette choice too, my only issue is that the games slows down so much whenever there's too much bullets on screen, not good for a bullet hell game, other than that, good job guys!

Interesting concept of upgrading the boss instead of the player :)

Nice bullet hell! And good idea for the theme! Good job!

cool! LIKE THE DISCLOSURE OF THE TOPIC is that you're improving the boss?)

Developer(+1)

Yep, that's the idea! Hope you enjoyed :)

A cool shootem up game. Love the theme behind it.

Interesting game, definitely unique concept. I like the hand drawn visuals.

I also experienced the game slowing down to a crawl after beating the genie a few times.

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks, I'm behind the art and idea for the game so that makes me happy :D you don't seem to be the only one who's has that bug, but it may be a hardware issue, not sure, but I have people who've played through to the end of the game with no problems, so might be... Sorry that it happened to you, but you didn't miss much! The upgrades are the same options for both bosses so I think you can imagine how it would play out. Hope you had a good enough experience :)

Developer

Alright, we've identified the issue. You've basically already beaten the game. The bug only happens once your max the genie difficulty, and he's the last boss. All you missed out on was the win screen saying "thanks for playing," so I hope you can judge the game based on your experience up to that point! Thanks for taking the time to play our game and write a comment.

Cool boss rush game.

Had a lot of fun with this until the game became increasingly slower (just everything, walking, animations, the complete game speed was continuously reduced), to the point where each round took 3x the time it should, that's where I stopped. Also my genie boss was reset to 0/350 after I maxed him once, not sure if that caused the bug of time slowing down. (Frames were also reduced, wasn't nice to play)
I like the thematic music and pixel aesthetic a lot!
All in all really fun experience! One of my favorites!

Tidali of Crowfox ;)

Developer

Glad you were able to have some fun and it's up there in your favorites list! The slowdown bug seems to be common, but it doesn't happen to everyone, might be hardware or browser, if you could tell me your search engine/browser (Chrome, Yahoo, Firefox etc.) that might make it easier to pinpoint when it happens. Not the programmer for the game, so no clue why your genie would have reset unless you died (that resets the boss upgrades and difficulty), but as the artist, I'm glad you liked the aesthetic, I tried something new out with the double outlines, so I'm glad people think it worked well :)

Developer

The problem has been found, and a patch will be uploaded shortly after voting is over! Thanks for playing our game, and you really missed nothing. You are correct that the bug was caused by the genie's difficulty resetting, however the bug only occurs once you had already beaten the genie, and after that there was supposed to be a win screen, but the glitch happened instead. You didn't miss any gameplay, so I hope you can judge the game based on what you experienced up to that point. Hope you enjoyed!

Definitely!

Nice gameplay and design I love it, Good Job!

I like the concept of increasing boss's difficulty. I don't know if there is more then 2 bosses but it was fun. And I don't know why but after beating the second boss multiple times my game get progressively slower and slower, maybe because it's a web build idk.

Developer

Yeah there's only two bosses, we'd planned for 4 but over scoping is a beast. Not sure why your game got slower after beating the second boss though, what device are you playing on? That's the only reason I'd be able to see, although I haven't actually been able to play the final uploaded game yet, once I can I'll take a look at any issues commenters had, so thanks for reporting!

Developer(+1)

The bug has been resolved and will be removed once voting ends. Thanks for playing and writing us a comment. The glitch only happens at the point in the game where the win screen was supposed to show up instead, so you didn't miss out on any gameplay. Hope you can vote on the game up to the point where it was meant to end!

The art style is cute. My only complaint is the players view is too small. Right now I can't get close to the boss without getting hit by the bullets so I have to shoot it from off the screen.

Developer

Dang, the view seems to be the perfect size to me, but I guess everyone has their own preferences. Glad you liked the art, courtesy of myself ;)

Really well polished, one of my favorites. Fun concept, good job!
