If you have implemented the modifier, how have you done so?
I implemented the modifier by... wait Are you trying to bait me? How would it be a fakeout if I just let you know all my secrets?

This was great! Had a lovely time trying it out!

First off, I love the bootleg characters! I don't think I got all the references but definitely at least one 😅

The fakeout was also really good: For how... well... Janky looking the game is, there were actually some pretty neat mechanics!

I think this game falls very solidly into "So bad it's good"! It really feels made to be bad, which is an achievement!

I think a bit more sound would be good, and yeah I couldn't get past the last sets of enemies, but otherwise I loved it!

I admit I felt a little mixed on this one.

For starters I really have to congratulate you on implementing such a complicated series of systems for the combat sections! The various weakness, attack types, selecting individual enemies, and of course all the minigames. I can imagine how time consuming that must've been over the jam.

And I say this as someone who has spent a lot of time on combat mechanics in jams, I honestly think this game overstayed its welcome with the combat. I found it very impressive the first few run throughs, but each battle was quite long, and especially the last 3 fights that don't even result in a unique ending of any sort was just too much.

Also the lack of audio I think REALLY does this game a disservice, it made the lengthy battles more noticeable with just an eerie quiet. And just generally it would have made the minigames and combat more satisfying, especially the fruit ninja minigame.

As for more specific technical complaints:

The hit detection on the katana in the fruit ninja section isn't nearly generous enough, if you dont get the drop with the very tip of the katana it doesn't cut, which just doesn't feel fair or satisfying.

I was randomly teleported to the middle of the map after combat near the end, which made it even more tedious with the slow movement speed.

The minigames cap out at 3 per party member, meaning you can only really be punished in the minigames. If there was to be no upper limit I think it would make the game flow faster, and make the minigames more rewarding. Especially since theres a time limit on the minigames already, they can't go on indefinitely.

You really may as well have the music looping. I know its lampshaded in-game, but tbh it doesn't really come off as funny to me, just "oh great, silence!"

The bombs had some really cheap placements in some minigames, either right next to a drop that makes it impossible to reach the drop, or sometimes hidden underneath or inside the sprite of a drop.

Back to the positives, the art is very well done! I'm actualy kinda sad we didn't get to use the horror version of the characters but I'm happy you included them as optional side content. I think too often I've had to leave stuff on the cutting room floor, so maybe I'll steal your implementation of cut content in the future.

I also thought the DS style of movement was interesting, I think it would've been neat if the game could've been played on mobile with that setup, or at least allowed full screen in browser to see the game in a bigger picture.

Either way, I can tell a lot of love and effort went into this game, but I think there's some lessons you can take into your future work. Still, good job!

Tbh almost every problem in this game can be simplified to "I didn't playtest this game at all xp"

I think I have this weird ideology that is "Being generic is worse than being bad." That's why I always spend so much time on things that feel cool rather than things that make the game fun.

Maybe next time when I join a short jam like this, I'll try not making the game too cool and instead put more time into playtesting. Maybe a generic platformer, except the weapon shoots bullets that go in reverse, like in Tenet.

I definitely feel you on the not playtesting thing, I’ve only ever had people besides me playtest my games before release ONCE. And that was for my capstone project in uni. Especially for my games, and I imagine this one as well, so much time is spent just getting everything together there’s no time for testing or more changes until after release.

I think there is something to be said for avoiding being generic, especially in this jam. But I find the most important aspect of how much I enjoy an entry for SBIG, and jams in general, is if I’m feeling frustrated by a game. Regardless of if the game looks or sounds great, if I’m being annoyed by playing the game then I don’t enjoy it as much as a game with say stick figures but the game loop is quick and snappy.

But yeah more playtesting is always a good idea.

This was a pretty cool game, with a rather innovative battle/minigame system. I also adored the No More Heroes-esque loading screen transitions.

Granted, it did feel a bit awkward trying to control the game via mouse (it feels like this game could use a mobile build), and there were some moments (mostly in XxLordKnightxX’s minigames) where bombs were in rather cheap locations.

Still, pretty nice work!

Spoilers below.

This game feels like it's made for mobile devices, which is an interesting choice. I think there's SBIG potential there, but I didn't really enjoy it. The minigames are... cryptic. I eventually figured out most of them, but I still have no idea how the variant of the flying bug minigame with the hotplate is supposed to work. It also feels more like you're being penalized for doing badly at the minigames than rewarded for doing well, like the battles are balanced around doing perfect at the minigames.

The humour did not land for me, at all. I do recognize the style, I do understand what you were going for, but it's just not my thing. The references, similarly, flew over my head.

Honestly, the biggest hangup I have is that the game simply overplayed its hand. It's enjoyable for a while, but super repetitive and its quirks go from fun to frustrating fast. The janky controls and irritating minigames have a lot of novelty and cool factor, but once that wears off, it's just janky and irritating. There's also a bug where tapping the movement control teleports you to a location in the middle of the map, which was funny the first time and annoying the fifth.

The last three battles were three battles too many, and for some reason I didn't regain HP between two of them, making it a lot more tense than it should have been on top of being just tedious. Not getting an ending after those battles was really a punch in the throat.

I did like the graphics, and the music while it lasted. Alas, the music doesn't loop.

Yeah I really spent too much time building an expandable combat system, which I didn't even expand it much after I realized that the mini-games should be the core part of the game, not the combat system.

I actually had some ideas to make some of the lower-cost actions situationally better than the higher-cost ones. For example, the Gunslinger was going to have a reload mechanic, where if he run out of ammo, he has to not collect any energy for him to use his reload action.

This was an excellent masterpiece to play as the first game in this jam.

The dialogues were really funny, and the mini games were also very fun, while also having that lovely SBIG jank everywhere. The only suggestions I'd have would be including some sounds (even though the explanation for having no sound was amazing) and maybe making the fire mini game a bit more clear, since for a while I thought I was still supposed to dodge the obstacles and touch the other stuff with the character, and not with the flames (although that might just be me being stupid lol).

Either way, awesome entry!

So do you believe that fart jokes belong to the peak Gen Alpha humour?

Indeed.

Funny dialogue and interesting concept with the minigames for the fights. Also the switchup in the minigames was quite surprising.

The game has potential, it's just missing sound and a couple more minigames but you seem to know that already.

Still not a bad entry though and i had some fun with it.

I will say, the dialogue was entertaining. The battle system itself was alright, I liked how it showed on the walls which type is weak to which, same for effective. The art was also really nice, I love seeing 2D art in a 3D space. However, the genre fakeout wasn't much of a fakeout. It seemed liked a different type of minigame is all. The character in the fruit catch moved far too slow for it to be enjoyable to play the minigame. Overall, it's alright. The fruit ninja type minigame was fun.

I actually planned to add more minigames. I just added another 1 2 but I still think there's too few. I also added bombs to minigames to make them more challenging. I'll let you know once I finished the rest 2 4 minigames.

Also my original idea was to just lie about the game's genre, and also trick the player into playing the wrong game.

Developer(+1)

so i just made another update and it will be the final one

the game is still pretty crap overall, though, with just 1 extra minigame (that i forgor to put instruction and may result in making it confusing af) so it's okay if you dont feel like replaying it
