JAM INTRODUCTION

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The ODU Serious Games Jam is part of a collection of game jams hosted every semester by ODU's Game Design program and Game Design & Development Club. These competitions are an opportunity for ODU students to demonstrate their creative capabilities while making impactful games and collaborating with peers.

Participants have roughly two weeks, from Monday, February 9th to Monday, February 23rd, to design a game that conveys a message and aligns with the theme, which will be released on Monday, February 9th. Participants can work individually or in teams and can submit board games, card games, and video games. The finished games will be featured during the Game Jam Showcase, which will be held on February 27th from 5:30PM - 9:00PM in Monarch Hall 2116.

THEME

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The theme for the jam is.... TIME

A story told of a bygone place, a heart-pounding race against the unrelenting ticks of the clock, bending the fabric of the universe backwards. How will you interpret this theme?

RULES

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. All participants must be current ODU students or ODU alumni.

2. Jam participants may work alone or in a team of any size.

        - Students may only participate on one team that submits a game for the jam.

3. Participants may submit a digital game using any game engine, or a tabletop game.

        - Tabletop game submissions must include pictures of the completed game as well as a design document including game details and rules.

4. All submissions must relate to the theme: TIME

5. All game submissions must be serious in nature.

       - A serious game or applied game is a game designed for a primary purpose other than pure entertainment. The "serious" adjective is generally prepended to refer to video games used by industries like defense, education, scientific exploration, health care, emergency management, city planning, engineering, politics and art. Serious games are a subgenre of serious storytelling, where storytelling is applied "outside the context of entertainment, where the narration progresses as a sequence of patterns impressive in quality ... and is part of a thoughtful progress".

6. The use of premade assets and audio is allowed as long as they are free, paid assets are not allowed. Any assets used need to be cited  properly.

7. The use of generative AI tools in any capacity is not allowed for this game jam. We want to see what you're capable of making, not ChatGPT!

8. All video game submissions must be playable on PC and must be able to be uploaded to itch.io.

9. Do not violate ODU's honor code or student policy.

10. All submissions must be submitted to the jam page by the Feb 23rd 8:00:00 PM deadline.
