Awesome game, I did find the select feature of the options a little confusing sometimes as well as the battles being 100% random, which gave no porpuse for the battle in itself, but apart from these 2 points, the game feels amazing as well as the graphics and the story which are awesome.

How does your game meet GBJam's theme?
The game story is based off bad luck, the player loses his wife while gambling and believes someone cursed him with bad luck. The whole gameplay is luck-based and introduces "unlucky" characters such as: black cat, broken mirror, stairs, which are all the final bosses and main antagonists. The game mechanics have been designed specifically to put the player at a disadvantage.

We had remarkably similar ideas for our entries! The art and character designs are all great! I'd say though, if the combat is going to be purely random like it is now (At least I think it's purely random, I may have missed something), I'd make the fights a lot shorter.
Also- it can be a little unclear at times what arrow key you need to press to navigate to certain buttons. The Blackjack Hit/Stand buttons are a good example. The Stand button is below the Hit one but you have to press right to get to it.
Amazing style! Graphics here are top tier. The music was ok but it's really short so get's annoying really fast. Gameplay is sadly boring, most of the time I just mashed the spacebar during fights without looking at the dices or cards because it is pure... luck. Oh an the humor is amazing too.
Wow, what I like most is the whole graphic style and the animations — impressive!
haha I loved it XD a bit too advanced for the GB but very well executed! movements are a bit quirky and I got lost in the second room at some points but eventually I could finish it.
- I loved the silly enemies
- The combat system is full random right? When I got lost I ended up spamming space so much time
- the palette is very nice too! I like that the roulette use “pink” instead of “black” to reflect this
great work!!
Took me a bit to get into it, but i did beat it! Very nice little game. for things to improve, not being able to have 2 input directions at once was a bit jarring, and the after combat text took too long. Other than that I had a lot of fun!
I was already laughing from the disclaimer! The graphics? Very nice. The humor? Incredible. The game has so much personality; you all did an amazing job!
I like art and pink palette, but pls dont scale or rotate sprites, it kills such a beautiful pixel art
and btw: dont bet your wifes, guys
To clarify things:
If you talk to npcs they tell you fun facts about the gambling minigames.
You can buy items from the cat vendor to increase your luck and become more powerful.
Each combat level has a boss room, after defeating the boss you get a key for the next level. The room where the boss spawns has a door to go back in the overworld casino level.
The graphics were incredible. The gambling was hilariously unlucky. I did get stuck though. The cat said he would give me something for 100 credits or lose it all and I would get it for free, but I couldn't figure out how to redeem that, was I suppose to literally buy something off of him for 100 credits?
The art and personality of this game made me laugh, very charming! You also put an impressive amount of games and systems in place! I didn't fully understand the combat but it was quite visually pleasing. I can't believe you got working slots, roulette (with funny animation), and blackjack ai going. Awesome!
It was a lot of work, now we know not to make a game at this scale :)) The combat worked like this, turns alternate between defense and attack and every turn you draw a card, if you draw a card with a value higher than the enemy then you roll 2 dices, if both dices have the same value you deal critical damage. I wanted to add abilities too but time ran out.
That was intriguing! The premise and design is charming, and I like the extreme the casino theming is taken to.
The mechanics are competent, but a bit confusing and repetitive. I'm not sure if I missed an in-game explanation, but I never figured out how cards and dice relate to damage and defense. That said, the battle art is gorgeous!
The audio balancing is strange. At default volume, the music is quite soft, but then several sound effects in the battle sections are quite loud and peak the audio above 0.0 dB.
All-in-all, great work!
Some sound effects for battle were added an hour before submission and we didn't get to playtest everything:(
The combat was all based on luck, you could buy lucky items from the cat vendor to increase your luck. Then in battle you had a hugher chance to draw a higher card than your enemy and roll a critical hit.
