Fastelavn is a carnival tradition from Northern Europe/Scandinavia. It typically involves children dressing up in costumes, going door to door singing, and collecting treats (similar to Halloween or Carnival.

In Denmark and Sweden, a central Fastelavn tradition is "hitting the cat out of the barrel." Participants take turns striking a barrel with a bat; the two winners are the first to knock out the bottom and the one who knocks down the last piece. Also the barrel is filled with candy, not actually a real living cat.

Another Scandinavian carnival custom is children playfully "flogging" their parents in the morning using a decorated rod.
