I had an error with gitlab "'dict' object is not callable" arising on the authenticationg stage. It happened because I used old version of requests package. Updating the reqests package resolved the issue.

Please, add requirements for requests >= 1.0. See http://stackoverflow.com/questions/18174632/dict-object-is-not-callable for similar situation.
