Finally finished unwrapping the UVs. It was unusually challenging because certain objects have multiple visual states: split into a number of segments, depending on the blocks they occupy, and whole. Some details:
- I decided to unwrap everything that belongs to the same material as one UV for smoother transitions between the segments.
- Each continuous ground surface had to be unwrapped separately per side (I used project from view for this).
- Each mesh that needed splits was unwrapped first, then split with the Boolean modifier; because of that, each split part had additional geometry of the cross section which had to be unwrapped manually.
- Some areas were giving me trouble: some issues occurred due to questionable geometry, others – due to normals; I was able to address the latter with with auto smooth.
Painting in Substance is always fun and engaging for me:
- The standard wood bark material with some colour and hue adjustments worked pretty well for creating a semblance of pine needles and bush greenery.
- The ground texture was triplanar projected for continuity.
- Used a filled layer in glitter mode to imitate berries in the bushes, then manually erased the excess with a white mask.
- The tent fabric was giving me trouble, but ultimately, a combination of orange synthetic weave with the folds from the Fabric WOOD smart material on top worked surprisingly well.
Happy to finally be painting, the next step is to add more detail and make the scene look a bit more cohesive.
